Report on the Mongol Ukrainian Khanate

History

The Mongol Khanate of the Ukraine is a very recent creation, having been created after the fall of Novy Kiev in May of 2042. A swift onslaught by Mongol General Noyon Ojeitu Temur, son of Khan Shidebala of the High Altai Khanate. Using the winter to allow his cavalry to cross the frozen Don River, Ojeitu Temur smashed the poorly equipped and prepared Ukrainian Royal Army under King Konstantin II Borosdin into a disorganized mob. Most of the Ukrainin Army died in the retreat, harried by the more mobile Mongols. The survivors followed King Konstantin II to exile in the Duchy of Transylvania.

Since the fall of the Ukrainian Kingdom, Ojeitu Temur has tried to extend his power into Central Europe. In competition with the Khanate of Moscovy, the Mongols have been bringing the weak and disorganized states of Central and Eastern Europe into the Mongol fold by a mixture of threats and bribery.

Diplomatic Situation Currently, the Ukrainian Khanate directly controls the Duchies of Ruthenia, Roumelia, and the Kingdom of Belorus through occupying forces. In addition, the Duchy of West Ukraine, the Kingdoms of South and East Poland, and the Principality of Lithuania have pledged loyalty and paid tribute to the khan.

The Imperial Family

Ojeitu Temur is the first and only Khan of the Ukraine, having been granted the post in 2042 after his army destroyed the Ukrainian Kingdom. He is believed to be about 45 years of age. ruthless, and totally autocratic, he is a typical Mongol ruler. He has several wives, including Princess Irina Borosdin, who was captured in the fall of Novy Kiev. He also has numerous concubines in addition to his wives. He has eleven legitimate children and dozens of natural children.

His daughter Sorghagtani, married Sultan Selim III in April, no doubt sealing some sort of alliance between the Turks and Mongols. Another daughter, name unknown, is married to the Khan of Moscovy.

Military Situation Currently, analysts believe that the bulk of the Ukrainian Khanate's army is deployed in Bulgaria facing the Imperial Roman Danube frontier. Supporting them are the modern troops of Roumelia and Ruthenia, and the primitive cavalry of the Kingdom of Belorus. It is quite likely that the Mongols will attack the Romans in conjunction with the Adana Turks.

Army Organization

The Ukrainian Khanate uses the same basic military organization of all the other Mongol states. The striking arm of the army is the horse cavalry, organized in 10,000 man units called Tumans, each subdivided into ten 1,000 man regiments. Most Tumans have several batteries of artillery, usually black powder, but increasingly more modern captured Japanese or Roman weapons. Current estimates give the Ukrainian Mongols 4 Tumans of cavalry, one Mongol Guard Keshik, one Cossack, one Turcoman, and one Khirghiz/Bashkir. There are five foot Tumans, mainly Ukrainian subject levies, are organized similarly, but are much inferior in equipment and morale. The Ukrainian Mongols also have some companies of Roman tankettes captured this spring.

Military Equipment

Troops of the first regiment of the Mongol Keshik are armed with refurbished Soviet AKs, the others with a mixture of bolt action rifles of diverse provenance. It is believed to have two companies of Roman built L3/35 tankettes attached, as well as three battalions of Roman 75mm howitzers. The other cavalry Tumans are armed with about 50% bolt action rifles, mainly recently captured Roman 6.5mm Carcanos, and 50% with black powder carbines. All have one battery of 81mm Roman mortars and two batteries of muzzle-loading guns. All Ukrainian Mongol Army horsemen carry bows, swords, and lances in addition to their regular arms. The Ukrainian levies are armed with black powder smoothbore muskets of Ukrainian make.

Economy

The Mongols are great traders when they aren't plundering others, however, the Ukrainian Khanate hasn't had enough stability to set up any effective trade routes with non-Mongol states, though analysts expect that they will soon begin trading with the Turks.
