Report on the Duchy of Transylvania

History

The Duchy of Transylvania was created in 1994 by the Roman Empire as one of the buffer states between itself and the turmoil of East Central Europe. To the west lies the Duchy of Hungary, which has been equally hostile to Transylvania, with Wars being fought in 1997-98, 2018, and 2036. The Roman Empire lies to the south.

Diplomatic Situation

Transylvania is a very small and very poor territory in the Carpathians. Because of its intractable hostility with the Hungarians, a legacy both of the traditional hatred between Hungarians and Rumanians, and the Transylvanian's "ethnic cleansing" of the late 1990s that drove the remaining Hungarian minority in Transylvania from their homes. The pre-Mongol Transylvanian alliance system was aimed at defense against Hungary and the Duchy of Roumelia, which harbored irredentist ambitions against the Rumanian-speaking Transylvanians. Pre-Mongol alliances included the Kingdom of the Ukraine (now occupied by the Mongols) and the Ukrainian speaking Duchy of Ruthenia, as well as its client state relationship with the Roman Empire. The coming of the Mongols changed all that, with the destruction of the Ukraine and the reduction of Ruthenia to vassalage. The current King-in-Exile of the Ukraine, Konstantine Borosdin, lives in Transylvania.

The Mongol threat has driven the Transylvanians and their former enemies together. Currently, the Hungarians, Transylvanians, and Romans have formed a combined military command, the Carpathian League Army, under Roman Field Marshal Duke Giovanni Cadorna. Little cooperation occurs between the Hungarians and Transylvanians, and the Italians have separated them into different operational commands.

Transylvania does not have diplomatic relations with the UKA, with the Roman Embassy acting as its proxy.

The Ducal Family

The current ruler of Transylvania is Duke Nicolai Guldescu. Only 21 years old, Duke Nicolai is hot headed and ambitious. He hates the Roumelians with a passion, feeling that his family is the rightful rulers of the Rumanian people. He is strongly pro-Roman and anti-Hungarian, as well. His views on the UKA are unknown, and he is probably indifferent to us. He is married to a daughter of the King of South Poland, and they have no children. His mother is from the Duchy of Polish Pommerania, and his sister Valentina is married to the brother of the Duke of Ruthenia.

Military Situation

Army organization and equipment are that of the Roman Army. As is normal for Roman client states, Transylvania is not permitted tube artillery, armored vehicles, or aircraft.
