Report on the Kingdom of Greece

History

When the Soviet Union and Wrsaw Pact overan European Turkey and the Balkans in 1985, the Greek government and its forces were driven to the Pelopenese Peninsula, holding the line of the Corinth Canal. When the Soviets collpased in the nuclear exchange, the Warsaw Pact forces settled down into cantonments as permanent occupiers of Northern Greece. The Greek government settled in Argos and retained control of most of the Greek isles. Playing off the Romans and the Russians against each other, the Greeks avoided being occupied by either. While nuclear damage was light in the areas remaining under Greek control. the loss of the industries of Athens and northern Greece, coupled with their poverty, doomed the Greek state to a rapid population, economic, and technological decline. When added to the effects of the nuclear winters of 1985 - 1986, the population of Greece was barely 10% of its pre-1985 population remained by 1990.

Political instability was a near inevitable consequence of these disaterous conditions. Coup followed coup in the late 1980s and early 1990s as one miulitary dictator toppled another. Not until 2002 did the chaos come to an end when General Alexandros Spyridion took control of the Greek Government with covert help from the Rman Empire. Proclaiming himself King Alxeandros I of Hellas, he used Roman-supplied Irish mercenaries to crush all political opposition to his rule. The Greek kingdom has enjoyed political stability since then.

Greek relations with the Romans deteriorated as the empire absorbed the former Warsaw Pact states in the Balkans. In order to stave off what appeared to be inevitable conquest by the Romans, the Greeks pursuaded the Isrealis, Egyptians, and even the Turkish Sultanate of Adana to join them in 2013 in what was called the Quadrilaterial Pact A combination of strength and growing Roman involvement in the Americas successfully diverted Roman attention to find easier pickings elsewhere. By the early 2020s, growing tensions over the Aegean islands led to the dissolution of the Pact, however, the Greeks have maintained good relations with both the Isrealis and Egyptians to this date. By the time Alexandros I died in 2029, the Greeks were again on good terms with the Romans. Alexandros was suceeded by his nephew Demetrios, who died soon after in 2033. Demetrios was suceeded by his son, the current king, Alexandros II.

The new king steered a careful course between the ambitions of the Roman Emperor and the Sultan of Adana until 2037, when a Turkish Army conquered Greek Cyprus and captured Samos and Rhodes. The Romans, mired in a catastrophic war in the Americas with the UKA, was unable to provide any assistance. The Greeks were forced to cede all captured territory captured by the Turks to them at the Treaty of Yafo in February 2038. As a result of Roman weakness, the Greeks transferred their alleigence to the UKA that summer with a Mutual Defense Pact signed at Gibralter in August.

In 2042, the Greeks supported the UKA's surprise attack on the Romans. In the resulting treaty negotiations, Greece acquired Attica and Boeotia from the Romans. In the Spring of 2046, the Greeks supported the UKA in its war against the Turks and regained both Rhodes and Samos. As tensions have remained very high, the UKA has sent an expeditionary force to the Greek Mainland to support the small, but increasingly professional Greek Army.

Diplomatic Situation

Greece has a mutual defense pact with the UKA and Commonwealth, pledging instant aid in the case of any third party attacking a signatory of the Cadiz Treaty in the Mediterranean Basin. Greece remains very friendly with Isreal and Egypt. The Greeks remain proudly independant, and refuse to join the UKA Commonwealth.

Military Situation
The Royal Greek Army is well rained and decently equipped by the standards of the area.  A small UKA advisory mission has helped improve Greek tactical training.

Military Equipment The Greek Army is equipped with a mixture of Roman and UKA manufactured equipment. Currently, the Greek government is attempting to reequip its forces with UKA compatible weaponry to ease supply in the case of future conflict.  Budget limitations has restricted this change to a trickle.

Economy

The Greek economy is oriented towards the sea.   Much of the wealth generated by foreign trade is due to the large Greek merchant marine transshipping the goods from other states.  Greece also produces large quantities of preserved seafoods for export, as well as wool, wine, and olive oil.  The Greeks import manufactured goods from the UKA, Commonwealth States, and the Roman Empire.  It also imports food stuffs from Egypt, particularly wheat.
