Flag of the County of German Pomerania
History
The County of Pomerania was forged out of the northeast coastal region of the pre-war DDS. Major General Gerhard von Sieben's 10th Panzer Division found itself in this region on October 15, 1985, they day of the nuclear exchange. Coming to an agreement with Polish Lt. Gen. Josef Dombrowski to suspend offensive action to the east, Von Sieben turned to political consolidation and disaster relief. In November, he concluded a formal alliance with Dombrowski.
In 1990, Von Sieben sought legitimization of his rule by applying to the court of the new Roman Emperor for recognition. On October 10, 1990, Von Sieben was recognized as sovereign Count of Pomerania. Count Gerhard died six years later and was succeeded by his son Franz I. A shrewd diplomat, Gerhard sought marriages alliances throughout Europe as a way of strengthening his family's position. His second son, Adolf, was married to the heiress of his old ally, Polish Pomerania, and succeeded him as duke.
For the next thirty-five years, Count Franz would be the dominant ruler on the south Baltic Coast. He married his eldest daughter off to the Roman Duke Vittorio DellaChiesi of Faenza, and his youngest daughter, Michaela, to the Duke of Westfalia. Pomerania remained at peace with its neighbors, save for banditry, throughout this period.
Franz died in 2025 and was followed by his son Erich I, who remains count to this day.
Continuing his father's policy of peaceful co-existence, he has remained at peace until a coup in
Polish Pomerania led to an intervention in 2044. Part of the county's army remains in western
Polish Pomerania.
Diplomatic Situation
The County of Pomerania is currently at war with the rebels in Polish Pomerania. It is allied to
Sweden, Westfalia, and formerly, was allied to Novgorod, before that state fell under Mongol
domination. It exists on friendly terms with both the Romans and the UKA. Diplomatic
relations between the UKA and Pomerania were established in 2031 and have been cordial ever
since. The current ambassador, Baron Gebhard Scherf, has been in Portland since 2036, and is a
popular figure on the social scene.
The Ducal Family
The current duke, Erich, is a conciliator, as was his predecessors. He is able and popular. His
sister, Michaela, is the wife of Duke Siegfried of Westfalia.
Military Situation
The Pomeranian army is small, though professional. Other than the recent intervention into
Polish Pomerania, it has seen little action.
