Background and History

The son of a wealthy ship owner in Juneau, John's father got him a commission in the Alaska League's fleet as a political favor from Admiral Ffolkes in return for help in shipping supplies for the construction of H.M.S. Phoenix. Upshur was assigned to the new ship's gunnery department, where he quickly became a favored protoge of the future King Josh, then serving as gunnery officer.
