The post 1985 world can be broken down into two distinct phases. The first phase, from 1985 to 2038, was dominated by Italy in Europe and the Atlantic region as it evolved into the Imperial Roman state. With its naval catastrophes off the Azores and subsequent collapse of cohesion and morale, the rising power of the UKA supplanted it. In Asia, the rising Mongol Empire grew to exercise hegemony from the Bering Straits to the Ukraine, with only China, India, and Southeast Asia remaining independent. In the Pacific, the Japanese and Indonesians have vied for dominance. South American has been dominated by Argentina in the south and Colombia to the north.
The world situation in 2046 is, to say the least, anarchic. No single state comes close to having world hegemony. Even the UKA can only aspire to a position analogous to that of Britain in 1815, dominating sea-borne commerce but unable to project its power far inland in most places.
